Thinking Box 1.1: Finding a topic: my niggles, norms and nevers
Social Practices that niggle me: 1. When teachers just watch children play. 2. When teachers don't interact with children during play time. 3. When teachers underestimate children's learning. The one that is most important to me when teachers don't interact with children during play time.
What niggles me about this practice is that children are not able to develop their language and social interaction skills while they are playing and learning.
I would like to know more about how to ask more questions to children to help them explore, create, and think deeper while they are playing and interacting.
What I normally do about this niggle is to talk with the children about what they are doing.
What I would like to change is to ask deeper questions that will help the children to think and make connections and develop their language skills.
The most interesting and meaningful way to resolve my niggle through an action research project would be to observe the teachers at Mid Pac while they are communicating and encouraging the children's thinking.
My action research topic will be...To change my own ways in the way I communicate with children to further their language and thinking skills so they are better listeners, communicators, creators, and explorers.
Thinking Box 1.2: Assessing the suitability of my research topic:
In my early years of work, I would like to improve the following: How teachers communication with young children. I want to be able to ask questions and encourage them so they are able to think outside of the box.
This is associated with these rituals, customs, and conventions: Conventions of how effective communication will benefit young children, the issues that should be included in a quality thought out lesson plan to promote the language skills and social interaction of children, and the activities that are considered appropriate to use.
My proposed research topic is: Teacher communication with children to further their language and thinking skills so they are better listeners, communicators, creators, and explorers.
My proposed research topic is suitable for action research because its foci are: Improving and changing my circumstances: - It can improve how teachers plan their lesson plans by focusing on effective communication with their children. - It can change the way teachers communicate with their children to better their language and thinking skills.
Improving social practices: - It will create new knowledge about how teachers are able to effectively communicate with their students by asking questions and encouraging their thinking skills.
Relevant to my locality: - Working on the people who will be involved in my action research project.
1. What if communication with children was the most important thing in an early childhood program? 2. Why can't we choose to better our communication skills with young children? 3. How could dialogue with children be different in the terms of how we actually communicate with each other? 4. What else could happen if teachers effectively dialogued with young children? 5. How can being able to effectively dialogue with children change the way children are able to communicate with their each other and adults?***

Things that might hinder my project would be the people who I chose to work with, because they might be busy with their work. I can talk to them and let them know my idea for my project and ask if they can work with me.
When am I likely to receive permission to start my project?...This coming week
What will be my first step and when will I take it?...To talk with Leslie and Robynne about my project and ask what their inputs may be. I will start tomorrow.
What resources will I need to take my first steps?... Background information about communication and dialoguing with children.
Will anyone else be involved in my first steps?...Jeanne and Jordan
What data about my first steps will I collect?...Observations of the teachers dialoguing with the children. View points of Robynne, Leslie, and Jordan about my question.
What will I do if my first step don't go according to plan?...Email them about my plan and project.
